Canine Action Project

Partner First Nations

PartnerFirstNations Sunrise

Canine Action Project wouldn’t be possible without the trust, confidence, and relationships we have with our partner First Nations.

We partner with First Nations across Treaty 6 Territory and Saskatchewan to provide our programs and services. We work closely with each of our partner Nations to provide wanted, needed, and relevant programs to meet each Nation’s needs. Each of our partner Nations enter into an agreement with Canine Action Project on an annual basis to work together towards a healthy, sustainable dog and cat population in their Nation. We have a goal of long term relationships with our Partner Nations – some Nations we have been working with for over a decade!

Programs are available to all band members in our partner First Nations, year-round.

Multiple conversations take place between Canine Action Project and Nation leadership prior to entering a partnership about current animal-related concerns, a needs analysis, and ultimately deciding if Canine Action Project can meet specific Nation needs and wants.

Partner Nations enter a contract with Canine Action Project that includes an annual fee-for-services agreement; while this is a financial contribution, this annual fee does not cover all costs associated with Canine Action Project’s programs. The majority of our funding is secured through grants, sponsorship, and donations.

The goal of Canine Action Project programs are to support long-term change. We know that for long lasting positive outcomes, a multi-method approach is required. This means we do not conduct large removals or ‘pulls’ of animals from a Nation. We know that only providing one service without providing others will only result in a temporary band aid solution and relief, and will not result in long term solutions. Instead, we focus our efforts toward multiple on-going, year-round programs.

We are so grateful to the First Nations that we have worked with since 2011. We are appreciative of the relationships we have built with community members, and their dedication in taking a proactive approach to their Nation’s animal health and population management, and community safety!
